Building columns are often treated as obstacles in shopping malls, airports, hotels, museums, and exhibition spaces. They support the building, but they may interrupt open areas or leave surfaces that are difficult to use.

A creative LED display can turn these columns into digital media surfaces. Flexible LED modules can follow round or curved structures, allowing an existing column to become part of the visual design.

However, wrapping a column with LED is not simply a matter of measuring its diameter and adding modules.

The new screen also adds thickness around the original structure. If this is not considered early, the finished LED column may block store entrances, directional signs, advertising displays, or important viewing paths.

The goal should therefore be simple: add the LED display without making the existing column a bigger visual obstacle.

Start With the Space, Not the LED Screen

The site survey should record the column diameter or width, column height, distance to nearby walls, storefronts, entrances, escalators, and pedestrian routes.

Viewing direction is equally important.

Imagine a column inside a shopping mall. People may approach it from four different directions. Behind the column there may be a store entrance, while another side faces an escalator.

A screen that looks suitable from one position could block an important sign when viewed from another.

For this reason, the design should consider both the physical size of the column and the visual space around it.

This is especially important when integrating creative displays into busy public environments such as airport terminals, where columns may sit close to passenger corridors, retail zones, and directional information.

Calculate the Final LED Footprint

One common mistake is using only the original column diameter when planning the project.

Suppose an existing round column has a diameter of 800 mm.

After installation, several layers may be added:

  • supporting frame
  • LED modules
  • mounting components
  • cable space
  • protective or decorative edge

If the complete LED structure projects about 65 mm from each side, the finished diameter becomes approximately:

800 mm + 65 mm + 65 mm = 930 mm

The original column has not moved, but its physical footprint has increased by 130 mm.

That difference matters.

In a large atrium, 130 mm may cause no problem. In a narrow retail corridor, it could affect pedestrian clearance or make a nearby sign harder to see.

This is why the final installed diameter, rather than only the original column diameter, should be reviewed before production.

Map Important Sightlines Around the Column

A practical way to evaluate the design is to create several viewing points on the floor plan.

For example:

Viewpoint A: main entrance
Viewpoint B: escalator exit
Viewpoint C: main pedestrian corridor
Viewpoint D: nearby storefront

Draw a line from each viewpoint toward important objects behind or beside the column.

These objects might include:

  • store entrances
  • directional signs
  • reception desks
  • digital signage
  • exhibition entrances
  • architectural features

Then compare the sightlines before and after the proposed LED structure is added.

If the larger column begins to hide an important object, the screen design needs adjustment before manufacturing.

This simple check can prevent a visually impressive LED installation from creating a new problem in the space.

Keep the Supporting Structure as Thin as Practical

The LED module is only one part of the final screen thickness.

A bulky supporting frame can add much more depth than expected.

For existing columns, a custom thin steel or aluminum structure is often more suitable than a standard deep LED cabinet. Flexible LED modules can then follow the curved surface of the structure.

Front-service access can also help reduce the space required behind the modules.

Where the project allows it, power supplies, receiving cards, or other components can be arranged in accessible areas instead of simply increasing the depth of the entire column structure.

The objective is not to make the structure as thin as possible at any cost. It is to find a practical balance between screen depth, structural strength, ventilation, wiring, and maintenance.

A Full 360° LED Wrap Is Not Always Necessary

A 360-degree LED column can create a strong visual effect, but full coverage should not automatically be the first choice.

Consider where people actually walk and look.

If most visitors approach the column from two or three directions, a 180-degree or 270-degree LED surface may sometimes be enough.

Partial coverage can also leave space for maintenance access or reduce the projection required on a sensitive side of the column.

For example, imagine a column positioned close to a luxury store entrance. The front and two sides face the main mall corridor, while the rear side is close to the store.

Instead of forcing a complete 360-degree screen around the column, the LED display could cover the main viewing directions while keeping the rear structure thinner.

In this situation, protecting the architecture may be more valuable than maximizing LED surface area.

Test the Design Before Manufacturing

The best time to discover a sightline problem is before the LED structure reaches the site.

A 3D model or CAD drawing can show the original column and the proposed finished LED dimensions. Designers can then place virtual viewpoints at important locations and check what visitors will see.

For more complex projects, a simple physical mock-up can also help.

The test does not need to reproduce a working LED screen. A temporary structure matching the final outer dimensions may already reveal whether the design blocks a sign, entrance, or walking path.

A useful workflow is:

Site measurement → final footprint calculation → sightline mapping → 3D/CAD review → structure design → prototype or mock-up → production

This makes the decision based on the real building rather than only on the LED product.

Example: LED Column Near a Shopping Mall Entrance

Consider an existing structural column located between an escalator and a retail entrance.

The client wants to transform the column into a creative advertising display.

The first idea is a complete cylindrical LED screen.

During the sightline review, however, the proposed structure is found to partially hide the store entrance from people leaving the escalator.

Instead of moving the column—which is impossible—the LED design can be changed.

The support frame on the store-facing side can be reduced, the component layout can be adjusted, or the LED coverage can focus on the directions with the highest pedestrian traffic.

The final result still creates a strong digital feature, but the original function of the space is preserved.

This is the difference between simply installing an LED screen and integrating a creative LED display into architecture.
